The air quality in the majority of urban cities leaves much to be desired. High levels of pollution are prevalent in advanced regions, including the US. There are also workplaces with increased levels of dust concentration. And then, there are airborne diseases and viruses like coronavirus (COVID-19) that are equally dangerous in every corner of the world. What’s the best way to stay healthy under such conditions? There’s a solution – you need proper respiratory protection equipment. In this review of Airinum mask products, we are going to show you that protective equipment can be extremely comfortable and stylish.

Want to know more about the advantages of an Airinum mask? Then, keep reading until the end. This review talks about the protective qualities and usefulness of these respirators. We will also try to answer the most sought-after answers about this product.

What Is an Airinum Mask?

Airinum is a Swedish start-up company that was founded back in 2015. This organization focusses on providing top-quality respiratory protection equipment that can ward off the majority of air pollutants.

Aside from producing masks, Airinum takes active steps to improve air quality across the globe. For example, the company donates a percentage of its revenue to support various environmental activities.

Where Are Airinum Masks Made and Sold?

All of the Airinum masks are made and designed in Sweden. The company offers free shipping worldwide. However, if you live in South Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong – it’s better to search for these facepieces on local online shops.

Nowadays, their masks are in high demand in over 70 countries worldwide. What makes them so popular?

How Can You Protect Yourself With an Airinum Mask?

Protection from various types of airborne pollution remains the primary goal of Airunum. But how dangerous exposure to urban and household pollutants can be?

Data taken from the WHO official website.

According to research conducted by The World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 4.2 million people die every year as a result of outdoor air pollution. Furthermore, exposure to household smoke and fuel takes 3.8 million more lives per year.

Keep this information in mind. And now imagine this: almost 80% of residents of urban areas are exposed to air that contains high levels of dangerous airborne particles on day to day basis.

And then, there’s the crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak, which needs no introduction. That’s why it’s essential to wear proper respiratory protection equipment.

Masks from Airinum are classified as filtering facepiece respirators. They have received a KN95 certification. Wondering what a KN95 is?

As you might’ve heard, the most popular respirators available on the market right now are certified by NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health). These products are labeled as N95 respirators.

Now, KN95 is a mask approved by Chinese authorities as equipment that effectively filters 95% of airborne particles of 0.3 microns in size. It’s an equivalent to the NIOSH-approved N95 respirator that effectively protects against:

  • dust
  • odors
  • pollen
  • mold
  • chemical particles
  • smog
  • machine exhaust
  • animal allergens
  • viruses, germs, and bacteria
  • other types of hazardous pollutants (except for oil-based aerosols)

Still on the fence about the KN95 certification? Then we have good news.

The FDA (the Food and Drug Administration in the US) has already approved these respirators as an adequate means of protection against airborne diseases, fit for use even among health care workers.

What Is It Made From?

Urban Air Mask 2.0 is made of safe, top-quality materials. The shell is from polyester and elastane. The material undergoes Polygiene treatment (it’s a technology that processes the fabric with low concentrations of antimicrobial silver chloride). The valve sockets feature a stable silicon disc. The facepiece doesn’t have any lead, latex, or other irritative components in its composition.

By the way, each product comes with a mask itself, two air filters, two valves, a head strap, and a travel bag.

The Airinum company made significant changes to the design and composition of their masks back in 2018. In 2020, the company stated that it would discontinue the production of Urban Air Mask 1.0 and all of its components. That’s why in this review, we’re going to focus solely on the new collections of Airinum masks (Urban Air Mask 2.0 and limited editions).

Airinum Masks: Most Popular Products

All of Airinum masks feature five-layer filtering technology with KN95 respirators that offer over 95% filtering efficiency against airborne particles (0.3 microns in diameter).

Let’s look at these masks up-close.

Classic Collection (Urban Air Mask 2.0)

Urban Air Mask 2.0 by Airinum features fashionable and efficient Scandinavian design. These masks are sturdy, reusable, and extremely comfortable. Each product comes with an adjustable head strap, 3D memory soft nose foam, and valve sockets that allow you to replace filters without much effort.

The mask comes in 4 sizes:

  1. Extra small – for children (12-30 kg / 26-65 lb)
  2. Small – for teenagers and women (30-50 kg / 65-100 lb)
  3. Medium – for average adults (50-75 kg / 110-165 lb)
  4. Large – for larger adults (over 75 kg / 165 lb)

Urban Air Mask 2.0 is very breathable. It allows you to exhale air in a way that makes the mask’s shell less moisty. And, as we already mentioned, it features a slick minimalistic design that’s fit for any post-coronavirus setting.

However, Airinum offers even more slick-looking masks in the limited-edition versions.

Limited Editions (Marine Serre, Nemen, Alan Walker)

Airinum has produced special collections of the mask in addition to the basic model. These masks are results of collaboration with the Marine Serre label, Italian fashion brand Nemen, and Norwegian music producer Alan Walker.

All of these masks provide the same level of comfort and protection as Urban Air Mask 2.0. The only difference is the exclusive outlook, label, as well as higher price.

Replacement Filters (The Urban Air Filter 2.0)

Unlike the mask itself, the filters have a limited period of use. After about 100 hours of active usage, you’ll have to replace them with new ones. That way, you can achieve maximal filtering efficiency.

The Urban Air Filter 2.0 is available in 4 sizes and comes in a pack of 3, 6, or 12 units.

How to Wear an Airinum Mask?

Airinum masks don’t differ much from any other piece of respiratory protection equipment. Just as with any other mask, you can achieve maximum efficiency only by wearing them correctly.

The manufacturer refers to the official guidelines from WHO on how to wear these face masks. Let’s focus on some of the key points:

  • Hand hygiene is vital. You should thoroughly wash your hands with soap before and after touching the mask.
  • Use dry paper tissue to clean the filter of your Airinum mask (with clean hands, of course).
  • The mask should protect your respiratory system, which means that it should cover both your mouth and the nose. Ensure a tightest possible seal that leaves no gaps between the mask and your face.
  • Facial hair reduces the protective qualities of any respirator (except for full-face respirators).
  • When you need to take the facepiece off – you shouldn’t touch if from the front. Take it off from the back.
  • Refrain from touching the mask while wearing it. It increases the chance of accidentally touching the face, which raises the risk of catching an infection.

By wearing the facewear incorrectly, you can nullify the protective qualities of your Airinum mask. That’s why it’s vital to take these recommendations seriously if you don’t want to risk your well-being.

Are Airinum Masks Washable?

As the manufacturer states on the official site, not all parts of an Airinum mask unit are washable.

You can wash the mask’s shell and the head strap. There are no limitations here. You are free to clean these parts of the mask with soap and water. You can even put in in the laundry machine (hand-wash mode). Still, we recommend refraining from using alcohol-based substances for cleaning.

However, you should detach the valves beforehand because not all versions of the mask possess a high level of water resistance. For example, in Airinum Urban Air Mask 1.0, you can only rinse the valves in water without soap.

The filters, on the other hand, shouldn’t be washed at all. It will lead to a significant reduction of their effectiveness. If you want to clean them, you can use dry paper tissue.

How Long Can This Mask Be Used?

The mask shell is built to last because it’s made from quality materials. And, as we mentioned, it’s also easily washable. The filters, however, won’t last for too long if you plan on using this mask regularly.

Filter’s life depends on such factors as the overall air pollution, level of dust exposure, and frequency of use. Overall, it’s going to last for about 100 hours on average.

The Airinum has set its priorities correctly. It supplies people worldwide with a reasonably priced (if you don’t count the limited editions), fashionable, and efficient respirators. Airinum masks can protect the wearer from hazardous airborne particles, including toxic dust, pollen, mold, and even dangerous viruses. The latter makes them particularly useful amidst the global pandemic.
